The Ken Segal Gallery
is pleased to present our first exhibition by Saskatoon artist
Alicia Popoff, Spark.
Popoff has had numerous solo and group shows over the
years. This is her first show of new works in Winnipeg since 2000, where she showed at
the Upstairs Gallery.

Popoff’s recent work is inspired by concepts of energy.
This subject matter comes from investigating different perspectives such as the Eastern
philosophy of Taoism, which historically views energy, or Chi, as the essence of our
life-force. The Western view, in fields such as sub-atomic physics, sees all matter
essentially made up of pure energy.
The connections between the two world views become a starting point for
Popoff to imaginatively interpret in her paintings. By
incorporating patterns, gestural brush marks and textural qualities in her work in
playful and original ways, she becomes excited about creating an artist’s view of how
everything in essence starts and ends as pure energy.
Through a process of simplification, editing and abstraction, the paintings can
eventually be more about the marks, the colour, the line and the texture with only
vestiges of the original intent.
The show continues the commitment of the Ken Segal Gallery to
put on exhibitions of contemporary works of art. The show opens on November 25th, 2005
from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and continues to December 22nd, 2005. Alicia Popoff
will be in attendance at the opening and work is available for preview. To get more
