Always in tune with herself and her surroundings, Saskatoon visual artist Alicia Popoff is holding her latest solo exhibition, Prairie Meditation, at the Ken Segal Gallery in Winnipeg. Popoff has had numerous solo and group shows over the years in the city at Gallery 1C03 at the U of W, the Thomas Gallery and the Upstairs Gallery. Her work has been exhibited extensively across Canada and is included in numerous public collections. This is our gallery’s second exhibition by this amazing artist.
Prairie Meditation is inspired by Popoff’s life experience on the prairies, but not in the traditional ways. She explains in her artist statement, “Recently I have realized how much my work echoes my experience of living on the prairies though not in the usual sense of a landscape or a depiction of a prairie vista. Rather, I feel my work absorbs and transmutes the subtle influences and nuances of prairie life in various ways.”
Popoff paints from her inner self. Guided by her intuition and her sense of exploration, she proceeds with her painting in a spontaneous manner, incorporating patterns, gestural brush marks and textural qualities in playful and original ways. As a result, her paintings are visually dynamic, rich in layers, texture and symbolism, capturing the interplay and the interrelationships of forms and matters in her works.
This show continues the commitment of the Ken Segal Gallery to put on exhibitions of contemporary works of art. Prairie Meditation opens on Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00pm and continues to March 15. Alicia Popoff will be in attendance at the opening and works are available for preview.
