After graduating with honours from the arts program at Beal Tech
in London, Ontario, Arthur Potts received a Fine Arts scholarship from the Latham Foundation
in California to attend the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. There he
studied drawing and painting with James Pinto and Fred Samuelson; sculpture with Lothar Kestenbaum.
His work follows in the tradition of post war European artists and American abstract
expressionist painters. Creative influences include Patrick Heron, Nicholas de Stael,
Peter Lanyon, Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn.
Extensive travel in Europe including several painting and sketching sojourns continually
inspires his work, especially the light, colour and atmosphere of Andalucia and Provence.
My paintings utilize abstraction as a method and landscape
experience as a source. I use the technique of abstract expressionism and the frisson of
colour and texture to create my work.
Painting is a process of recovering our first idea.
