The Ken Segal Gallery is proud to present A Lifetime of Thoughts by Betty Dimock. This is our first solo show featuring this remarkable 90-year-old artist. Betty Dimock has lived and still lives an amazing and active life. This show is focusing on the works that she painted on canvas and her hand coloured lithographs. It showcases much of her different bodies of work that, when seen together, one can see the same exploration of colour and forms.
Dimock has pushed herself and her art. She first studied in New York at the Pratt Institute in the 1930s before going into nursing and serving as a Nursing Sister in South Africa and Holland for Canada during World War II. She married and landed in Winnipeg where she went to the University of Manitoba and graduated in Fine Arts in the 1970s. That was when a group of artists brought in the famed art critic Clement Greenberg, who was impressed with Dimock’s paintings. She has also taken art school in Paris, Florence, University of Saskatoon, and Japan.
Dimock taught at the Forum Art Institute from 1968 to 1973 and served as president of the Manitoba Society of Artists from 1971 to 1974. She was a participating artist in the “Artists in the Schools” program from 1977 to 1980. In 1979 she conducted workshops for the Manitoba Teacher’s Convention. She has had numerous solo and group shows, including The Winnipeg Art Gallery and Confederation Centre in New Brunswick. This fall she will be moving her studio closer to her home so she can continue to work. Besides having a remarkable career as an artist, Dimock, who lost her hearing at age 29 due to some experimental treatments, has also been a very strong advocate for the hearing impaired.
A Lifetime of Thoughts by Betty Dimock, which runs until August 26, 2006, marks a continuation of the art exhibitions, both solo and group, at the Ken Segal Gallery. The opening reception is on Thursday, August 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. So, please join us at the opening to meet the artist, enjoy some light refreshments and see the show. As part of our commitment and goal to exhibit and develop contemporary art of an international standard, we aim to build our gallery to show quality works and distinctive pieces from an astonishing array of local and international talents.
