The Ken Segal Gallery is pleased to present our second solo exhibition of Winnipeg artist
Bruce Head R.C.A., Here and Now, featuring recent smaller works by this internationally-known
artist. The exhibition is an exciting display from an artist who, in his 6th decade of work, has brought those decades of
experience and honed talent together with fresh perspective, in bursts of bright colour. Here and Now
opens with an artist reception at the Ken Segal Gallery, located at 4-433 River Ave., on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Bruce Head was one of the first graduates of the University Of Manitoba School Of Art, a member of the school’s first graduating
class in western Canada – with students who sparked the emergence of Winnipeg’s vibrant contemporary arts community. For many years a
graphic designer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as well as a preeminent Canadian contemporary painter and sculptor, Head has, for the last 17 years, worked exclusively in his Winnipeg studio.
Head has shown in countless solo and group shows around Canada and internationally. His work is in numerous private and
public collections, as well as in public areas. Two particularly notable pieces can be seen in the lobby of the Woodsworth Building on
Broadway Avenue in Winnipeg, and in the concourse below the intersection of Portage and Main, where, in the mid-70s, he created
Canada’s longest piece of sculptural art – 428 feet of flowing abstract shapes and forms.
Head’s work is an exploration into form, structure, colour and gesture rather than an attempt to reproduce what one sees.
The characteristics of landscape painting are instead abstracted to become subtle elements in his work. This exhibition shows a
gifted artist who loves painting and shows no sign of slowing down.
