The Ken Segal Gallery is pleased to present our first exhibition of
Winnipeg artist Bruce Head RCA in a retrospective of this internationally-known artist’s work,
spanning 6 decades. The show marks the opening of the new season of exhibitions at the Ken Segal Gallery,
located at 4–433 River Avenue in Winnipeg.
Head was one of the first graduates of the University Of Manitoba School Of Art, the first
such graduating class in western Canada and the class that sparked Winnipeg’s vibrant contemporary arts
community. For many years a graphic designer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as well as a preeminent
Canadian contemporary painter and sculptor, Bruce Head has, for the last 15 years, worked exclusively
in his Winnipeg studio.

Head has shown in countless solo and group shows around Canada and internationally. His work is
in numerous private and public collections, as well as in public areas. Two most notable pieces can be seen
in the lobby of the Woodsworth Building on Broadway Avenue in Winnipeg, and in the concourse below the
intersection of Portage and Main, where, in the mid-70s, he created Canada’s longest piece of sculptural art –
428 feet of flowing abstract shapes and forms.

Head’s work is an exploration into form, structure, colour and gesture rather than an attempt to
reproduce what one sees. The characteristics of landscape painting are instead abstracted to become subtle
elements in his work. In this show, we explore his extensive body of work from early works and oil paintings
of the 1960s, to shaped canvas works of the 60s and 70s, to his concrete sculpture abstract "totems"
and new paintings just finished.
This show will encompass 6 decades of this remarkable artist’s work. The artist will be in attendance at the
opening reception. For more information or to interview the artist and receive press-ready images, please contact
