Robert Sim was born, raised, and lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He studied
at the School of Art at the University of Manitoba from 1985 to 1989. A sculptor as well as painter and
draughtsman, he works with a variety of media, ranging from clay, plaster, and wood to digital photography.
Sim prefers to work without any preconceived ideas, believing that visual art is a language of its own
and explains itself in its own terms. One of his favourite quotes regarding art comes form the
Polish/French painter, Balthus, “Painting is a language which cannot be replaced
by another language. I don’t know what to say about what I paint, really.”
Sim is the recipient of two Manitoba Arts Council grants. He has participated in a number of shows in
Winnipeg. One in particular is the group exhibition Subconscious City, held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery
in 2008.
