This work stems from my interest in negative space — an empty space or seemingly unimportant background space —
that has a subtle presence in the world and is frequently overlooked at first glance. For inspiration, I
considered the negative spaces first and used that emphasis to guide my process of creating the sculptures and
surface drawings.
The Hybrid Series emerged from my appreciation of simplicity and understatement,
as well as my fondness for the beauty and dynamic quality in horses, birds, fish and plant life. Themes of solitude
and connectedness emerge and coexist in many pieces.
I wish to thank the Manitoba Arts Council for helping
to make this exhibition possible.
