This is something that I think I read somewhere a long time ago and although they may not be
the exact words… it's something that I totally agree with.
The challenge for contemporary artists is:
-
To create ourselves from scratch, to invent our own subjects, themes and vocabularies.
-
To find a way to bridge the gap that divides mere self-expression and genuine communication.
-
To find a way to transform personal experience into work that has artistic merit.
-
To evolve an art that is not cramped, not confined to merely one kind of statement.
-
To devise an art that is never, merely, habitual, an art that can speak of many things… loneliness, sociability, fear, beauty,
idealism, pessimism, loss, memory, anticipation, jealousy, love…
These are things that all artists must deal with in their own way. My attempts to meet these challenges are, I hope, reflected
in my body of work.
My art is ongoing, and I continue to try to measure my production with these ideals in mind.
This, in my opinion, should be every contemporary artists “statement”.
